Claire Irons has been taken out of her normal routine to prevent her taking some action at work. She has been forced to sit on a chair for so long that her butt is numb. The man hired to keep her out of circulation drops in to check on her, touching her hair and clearly amused by her efforts to pull the hem of her skirt lower to cover more of her thighs. He tells Claire that he has to keep her for a while yet, but that he will drop in again later to make sure she is fine. Claire can't believe he is planning to leave her alone again, chained up and helpless, and begs him to let her go. It's hardly surprising that he ignores her and departs the house. After he leaves, Claire renews her efforts to pull at the chains, trying to create so slack that might enable her to at least wriggle free of the chair, but her attempts are completely futile. She is secured so well that she will never be able to escape. All she can do is wait to be freed, without knowing how long that might take.
